Continue reading »]]> The Shelby County Humane Society has seen a 10 percent increase during the second quarter of 2011, in the “save rate” of animals that leave their care.

Shelby County Humane Society Executive Director, Jenny Miller said the various pet adoption events, and an animal shelter transfer program is to credit, for saving the lives of Shelby counties furry friends.

Jenny Miller said, “They didn’t do anything to deserve to be here. Most of the times they are just a victim of the bad economy, of divorce, of people having to move, of people who have lost their jobs.”

Continue reading »]]> Bre and Henry’s Hammer will be playing a benefit Concert for River Dog Rescue. Please come and have some fun!

The concert takes place at The Pelican Reef, Friday September 9th starting at 7pm. There will be a $5.00 donation at the door. There will be some awesome fur-babies for adoption from 7 to 9 PM. Kids under 21 are welcome until 9:00 pm.

There will also be few raffles for some great items from Pet Supplies Plus.

Continue reading »]]> With an influx of animals and a serious lack of volunteers, the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter was forced to close its doors Thursday, according to its Facebook page.

To help them out, the Greater Birmingham Humane Society is stepping in, taking the overflow of animals to their location and reducing adoption fees.

Starting Friday through the end of June, dogs four months and older will be available for a fee of only $45 (dog adoption fees normally range from $75 to $150) and cats and kittens of all ages will be available for a fee of $60 (cats also range from $75 to $150).

Hopefully the reduced fees will make room for the Tuscaloosa animals GBHS will be picking up on Monday. The pets are either owner surrendered or have stray holds that have expired.

Continue reading »]]> The Lee County Humane Society is letting its feline friends jump the queue in June to try to level the playing field between cat and dog adoptions.

The shelter is waiving its $80 adoption fee for cats four months and older, but it’s keeping the same spay, neuter and vaccination perks that come with the adoption.

“Our cats a lot of times will get overlooked, and we have a lot of great cats that all need homes,” said Stacee Peer, Director of Public Relations and Outreach for the humane society.

Alabama Week for the Animals is a week set aside to raise awareness about the homeless dog and cat population. The week also highlights the dogs and cats in local shelters that need a forever home. It is part of an effort by Animal World USA.

The Alabama Week for the Animals team is actively organizing events and working with shelters and organizations daily across the state. Hopes are, that many life-saving and life-changing events will happen during this week to forever change communities, and raise awareness about pet overpopulation in Alabama.

Continue reading »]]> If you like seeing pets in costumes, The Wharf’s third annual “Howl-O-Ween Spooky Pooch Parade” promises to bring a cavalcade of memorable sights to Orange Beach this weekend.

The event, hosted by the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!), takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct 23. Admission for spectators is free.

“We had about 100 dogs registered last year,” said Sonja Presley, one of the event’s organizers. This years’s goal is to raise about $2,000, which will go primarily to medical care for animals rescued by BARC!, she said.

Continue reading »]]> A Pelham wine gallery will celebrate its fourth anniversary Oct. 15 by helping out one of the largest dog rescue organizations in the country while giving away a plethora of prizes.

Pleasure is All Wine, which is near the Oak Mountain Lanes bowling alley in Pelham, will hold its fourth anniversary Wine and Food Extravaganza beginning at 5 p.m. at the store.

Admission to the event is $30 per person, and all money raised during the event will be donated to the Adopt a Golden dog rescue program, which is an Atlanta-based non-profit organization.

During the event, the store will offer wine tastings and culinary fare from several local restaurants.
