Art 4 Paws will take place Saturday, April 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Village Green in historic downtown Madison. Festival organizers said a portion of all monies raised will go toward Madison area animal rescue groups and shelters.

“We realized that we all had a very sincere love of our pets and wanted to create an event that would combine animals with art,” said Beth Pierce, president of the Madison Arts Council.

Art 4 Paws is headed by Kristy Stewart. Other committee members include Michele Lee, Laura Pope, and Andy Stewart.

The festival will include adoptable animals from local rescue groups and shelters, vendors, photographers and painters. Vendors will have booths set up and will be selling various kinds of pet items including leashes, pet beds and treats. There will be a professional photographer on hand to take custom pictures of you and your pet. An artist will also commission hand-drawn pictures. Pet walkers, veterinarians and pet-oriented businesses will be in attendance.

More than 50 dogs rescued from Purple Hearted Puppies in Summerdale are ready for adoption and will be at Lulu’s in Gulf Shores on Saturday, looking for new families, Baldwin County Humane Society officials said Tuesday.

The adoption event will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Deneen Balistere, Humane Society dog adoption coordinator, said.

“We have all the dogs that are healthy enough to go,” Balistere said. “We anticipate between 50 and 55 dogs will be there. We do have some dogs that are heartworm positive and we had to wait until they were healthy enough before we could start treating for heartworms and when you treat for heartworms, it’s not really good for the hearts to get excited and move around too much.”

The dogs are among 109 animals seized when authorities found the facility on Baldwin County 36 on Jan. 26. Most of the dogs and cats found at the site and at the home of one of the owners were malnourished and more than 40 had died, according to reports at the time.

Pet owners that boarded their pets at Purple Hearted Puppies had until midnight Monday to claim their pet, but only a few people contacted officials.

“There were several people actually looking for dogs that had been missing for a period of time,” said Adoption Coordinator Deneen Balistere.

The Baldwin County Humane Society, also know as BARC!, said considering the number of animals it’s taken in it is right at it’s limit, but it’s ready for the long haul.

“We have processed, since January 26, 73 foster applications, 80 dog adoption applications and five cat adoption applications,” said Sonja Presley, Baldwin County Humane Society executive director.

All of the applications were submitted for a Summerdale pet. Requests are flooding in for the abused animals and dozens of donations have been mailed to the office.

Officials still need about a month to prep the animals for new families, and they have to be the right families.

“Just because you see it on TV, it’s cute and cuddly; we want to make sure it’s the right energy match in your household,” Presley said.

Several dozen animals rescued from the Purple Hearted Puppies shelter in Summerdale are recovering from their ordeal and are now available for adoption.

Baldwin County Humane Society said there are more than 100 animals that can be adopted.

They range in age from a few months to what they consider elderly pets.

Baldwin County Humane Society’s Dog Adoption Coordinator Deneen Balistere is optimistic about finding homes for all of these animals.

“It’s all of our goals,” Balistere said.

If they can’t or don’t find homes for them she said they will stay with them.

Balistere said some of these animals belong to owners who paid the Summerdale facility for boarding.

Shelby County Humane Society Executive Director, Jenny Miller said the various pet adoption events, and an animal shelter transfer program is to credit, for saving the lives of Shelby counties furry friends.

Jenny Miller said, “They didn’t do anything to deserve to be here. Most of the times they are just a victim of the bad economy, of divorce, of people having to move, of people who have lost their jobs.”

With an influx of animals and a serious lack of volunteers, the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter was forced to close its doors Thursday, according to its Facebook page.

To help them out, the Greater Birmingham Humane Society is stepping in, taking the overflow of animals to their location and reducing adoption fees.

Starting Friday through the end of June, dogs four months and older will be available for a fee of only $45 (dog adoption fees normally range from $75 to $150) and cats and kittens of all ages will be available for a fee of $60 (cats also range from $75 to $150).

Hopefully the reduced fees will make room for the Tuscaloosa animals GBHS will be picking up on Monday. The pets are either owner surrendered or have stray holds that have expired.
