Reduced cat adoption fees are planned at the Cape May County Animal Shelter & Adoption Center through June.

The Animal Shelter has more than 175 cats up for adoption.

“June is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month and Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoptions Center is hoping this promotion will increase cat adoptions plus make room for the influx of cats and kittens that inevitably arrive at the shelter in spring,” said Freeholder Len Desiderio.

Throughout June, the adoption fee for cats will be reduced by half.

This month, the shelter is offering an early bird special. Through May 31, adoption fees for cats over 1 years old is $10.

“If you have been considering making a feline addition to your home, now is the time,” said Sheriff Gary Schaffer. “Unfortunately as kittens begin to arrive the adults are overlooked. Our goal is to encourage adoptions of older cats.”

Cat adoptions include spay/neuter procedure, vaccinations, de-worming, flea control, microchipping, cat carrier, PetSmart coupons worth $160 and a free vet visit.

The Cape May County Animal Shelter & Adoption Center is in the Crest Haven Complex at 110 Shelter Road in Cape May Court House.

The facility is open seven days a week for adoptions and visitors from noon to 4 p.m. Also, cats from the shelter are available for adoption at the PetSmart store in Rio Grande.

For additional information contact 465-8923 or animalshelter@cmcsheriff.net or see www.capemaycountygov.net.

he dogs and cats were dressed up in their finest bow ties and cocktail dresses Thursday afternoon inside Trolley Square, trying to look their best for a potential new owner.

Temma Martin, spokeswoman for Best Friends Animal Society, said the classy attire perfectly fit the setting of the grand opening of the organization’s Pet Adoption Center.

“We’re excited, this is a celebration and we wanted to make it festive and fun,” Martin said.

The adoption center held a special event Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. to encourage adoptions, allowing new pet parents to pay whatever amount they chose for their new best friend. Regular adoptions for dogs are $75 and $25 for cats.

The new center houses 10 dogs and 10 cats at a time, with six pets already adopted since the center’s original opening May 9. Martin said the goal is to get 500 animals adopted over the next six months.

Mary Norton, 59, adopted a 2-year-old terrier-Chihuahua mix named Dixie Thursday to join her other dog, 4-year-old Donovan, who is also a terrier mix. Norton said she had an “instinctive” feeling about Dixie from the beginning.

“I’m really big on intuition,” Norton said. “I took one look at her and she looks like she could be my other dog’s daughter.”

Open your heart and home to a litter of cute kittens

The Cat Adoption Team (www.catadoptinteam.org) in Sherwood is seeking volunteer feline foster families for kittens – some orphaned and some with their lactating mom. Just this week, the Cat Adoption Team was asked to help 8 momma cats, 52 kittens, and 3 pregnant cats. The more qualified foster families, the more lives that can be saved today.

Join CAT in saving lives. There are several trainings scheduled for this month. Sing up by going to www.catadoptionteam.org/volunteer and clicking the “volunteer today” button.

What is fostering?

Fostering for the Cat Adoption Team is an in-home volunteer opportunity. CAT provides in-depth training and support as well as a ‘baby bag’ full of items needed to help you be successful in fostering. Foster volunteers are teamed with experienced mentors for one-on-one guidance and assistance.

Foster volunteers enable CAT to save more lives by opening their homes to kittens who need time to grow to 2¼ pounds so they are strong and healthy for the shelter adoption kennels or their new home. Many foster volunteers aid in the adoption of their kittens so they spend as little time as possible at the shelter.

How old is too old to adopt a pet?

That’s the question at the center of a dog adoption controversy in Texas.

David West is accusing the Amarillo SPCA of age discrimination.

West says he and his wife, Marian, who are both in their 80s, responded to an ad by the group for a chow that needed a good home.

West says the couple met the dog and even bonded with it.

Then, were suddenly denied the adoption.

“We needed a larger dog house, uh, my wife made an appointment to have the dog groomed and shampooed. And we go back and low and behold that’ s when they said they couldn’t let us have the dog and implying that I was too old,” said David West.

The Amarillo SPCA is denying the allegation.

An Amarillo SPCA spokesman says Marian West expressed concern about handling the dog.

He also says there are many criteria considered before adoptions take place

Memorial Day is coming up and Yavapai Humane Society wants to thank our veterans the only way we know how, by sending every American hero home with a new best friend.

In May, adoption fees will be waived for all active and retired military members.

Dog and cat toy manufacturer Kong Co. launched a charitable campaign called “Pets Need to Play,” through which the Golden, Colo.-based company will install live, interactive online toys for cats at several shelters across the country and will donate Classic Kong toys for dogs, as well, the company reported today.

The cat toys, called Kong iPet Companions, will be installed in feline enclosures at dog and cat shelters throughout the United States for six weeks at a time. Through the cat shelters’ websites, web surfers can remotely control robotic toys for shelter cats to play with and can view the action via streaming webcams.

The goal of the campaign is to increase adoptions of shelter cats, said KD Frueh, president of Kong.

Hundreds of four-legged pets, including a miniature horse, took over the Redmond Senior Center (RSC) — inside and outside — Saturday as part of the city’s fourth annual pet fair, “Whiskers, Wings and Wagging Tails.”

About 800 people — many of them with their pets — attended the popular event, which featured pet adoption opportunities, agility and obedience demonstrations, dog races and more.

“It’s always a big hit,” said Teri Burke, the RSC recreation program coordinator. “This event is about celebrating the connections with our companion animals. We know that it is important to Redmond citizens and their health.”

But the event was not limited to four-legged furry animals. Members of the Northwest Exotic Bird Society were on hand with their feathered friends. Even a chicken was at the event, brought by a group of residents who last year prompted the City Council to approve a change in city code to allow chickens on smaller lots in Redmond.

One of the more popular events at the pet fair was the flyball dog races by handlers from the Cascade Comets Dog Sports Club. The relay race features four dogs who jump over a series of hurdles to a box that releases a tennis ball to be caught when the dog jumps on the spring-loaded pad. The dog catches the ball and then races back to their handler and then the next dog takes off until all four dogs are done.
