Hundreds of four-legged pets, including a miniature horse, took over the Redmond Senior Center (RSC) — inside and outside — Saturday as part of the city’s fourth annual pet fair, “Whiskers, Wings and Wagging Tails.”

About 800 people — many of them with their pets — attended the popular event, which featured pet adoption opportunities, agility and obedience demonstrations, dog races and more.

“It’s always a big hit,” said Teri Burke, the RSC recreation program coordinator. “This event is about celebrating the connections with our companion animals. We know that it is important to Redmond citizens and their health.”

But the event was not limited to four-legged furry animals. Members of the Northwest Exotic Bird Society were on hand with their feathered friends. Even a chicken was at the event, brought by a group of residents who last year prompted the City Council to approve a change in city code to allow chickens on smaller lots in Redmond.

One of the more popular events at the pet fair was the flyball dog races by handlers from the Cascade Comets Dog Sports Club. The relay race features four dogs who jump over a series of hurdles to a box that releases a tennis ball to be caught when the dog jumps on the spring-loaded pad. The dog catches the ball and then races back to their handler and then the next dog takes off until all four dogs are done.

From the Humane Society of Huran Valley, Ann Arbor, MI:

This beautiful, medium-haired tabby/dilute calico mix cat named Cuddles, is an affectionate girl. She is 7 years young, front-declawed and looking for a family where she is the only feline for you to dote on. At this juncture in her life, she deserves to be a treasured pet and wants nothing more than a permanent home of her own.

Sadly, this is Cuddles’ third visit to the Humane Society of Huron Valley. Her last home had another cat, and their personalities did not gel. The house before that, where she had lived for four years, had a child that developed allergies. We know there is a family that would love a cuddle bug, laid back, affectionate lap cat. Could it be your family?

Cuddles will need to be an indoor only cat because she is front-declawed; she will also need brushing to keep her amazingly soft fur tangle-free.

It is easy to adopt Cuddles. Because we have so many adult cats that need homes, HSHV offers something we call “Pick Your Cat, Pick Your Price.” As long as you promise to care for Cuddles you can decide what you are willing to donate to adopt her. We do ask for at least $15 to help offset some of the expense of her care at HSHV. Our normal adopt fee is $45.

The Itty Bitty Kitty Rescue
Animal Rescue Saves all the Kittens In New York City, and is in need of help to find homes

A healthy 3 week old kitten arrived at the ACC, and 45 minutes later was killed for “having no mother”. No adopter or rescuer was given the opportunity to save this kitten.

On Mother’s Day, a mother cat and her two kittens were on the ACC kill list.

That’s when Pets Alive, a NY based No-Kill rescue organization, made the commitment to save all the other kittens still left in NYC – and immediately took 60 kittens and four mother cats from the NYC ACC. The volunteer transporter was instructed to save them ALL.

It is for reasons like this that New York needs a rescue access law like CAARA. CAARA would make it illegal for shelters to kill animals without giving rescues an opportunity to help. Pets Alive is committed to stopping the killing of all animals in the shelter system.

Pets Alive will work feverishly to provide medical care and find loving homes for all of what they are calling the” Itty Bitty Kitty Rescue”. Half of the kitties are at the Middletown NY sanctuary, and half are being cared for at the Elmsford, NY rescue center.

One of the kittens is very seriously ill. Little Mitzee is at risk of going blind. The CACC vets diagnosed her with “conjunctivitis”, but it is far more serious than that. One of Mitzee’s eyes must be removed and the other needs daily care and possible surgery in order to save her vision.

The cost is estimated to be over $5000 and is high risk for a kitten this young. Pets Alive is asking for donations to help not only this little kitten have a chance at life, but to help cover vetting and spaying and neutering for all 64 of these saved lives.

How To Help:

Donations are urgently needed to help provide medical treatment for the itty bitty kitties, including Mitzee, who is currently undergoing treatment to save her vision. To help provide care for them, donations of kitten food, toys and scratching posts are also needed. All of the kittens are in need of loving homes, to learn more about providing foster care or adopting an itty bitty kitty, please visit www.petsalive.org.

About Pets Alive:

Pets Alive is one of the oldest and largest no kill organizations in the United States saving more than 2,000 animals each year. Pets Alive is internationally recognized as a leader in developing alliances to end the killing of and promote the humane treatment of companion animals. The mission of Pets Alive is to improve the lives of companion animals everywhere by any means possible, including rescue, adoption, advocacy, collaboration, intervention and education.

Pets Alive operates three locations: Pets Alive Animal Sanctuary in Middletown, New York; Pets Alive Westchester in Elmsford, New York; and Pets Alive Puerto Rico, in Utuado, Puerto Rico. Pets Alive is a 501(c) (3) non-profit charity operating solely on individual donations, receiving no funding from city or state.

Many orphaned pets found their lifelong homes this weekend following the Spring Pet Adoption Faire in Memorial Park.

The event, which was organized by Upland Animal Services, resulted in the adoptions of dogs and cats from shelters and rescue groups throughout the region.

Saturday was the first time that Upland Animal Services hosted the event.

“I thought it went great,” said Jon Knowlton, Upland’s animal services supervisor. “Everybody was fantastic. The volunteers did a great job of helping everybody, and the vendors were fantastic. I thought it went really well.”

More than 50 animals were adopted during the event, Knowlton said.

The Upland shelter found homes for 14 animals, including five cats.

The Riverside County shelter found homes for 18 dogs, and the San Bernardino County shelter placed 11 in homes, he said.

The Upland shelter invited 14 other shelters to participate, including San Bernardino and Riverside counties as well as San Bernardino, Rancho Cucamonga and Baldwin Park.

Several rescue groups in the region attended, including Priceless Pets, Grey Save, All Breed Dog, Best Friends Animal Society, Pardon Me Inc. and Cat Love.

Low-cost vaccines and $6 rabies vaccines were available for pets as well as free microchipping for pets of Upland residents.

Keep Me Wild brought baby bobcats while the California Turtle and Tortoise Club brought tortoises.

Evanston dogs and their owners braved the rain Saturday to walk three miles for Strut for Strays, a fundraising event organized by Community Animal Rescue Effort, the city’s only pet adoption agency.

Supporters of C.A.R.E completed the walk through Ladd Arboretum on Saturday morning, raising $17,000 in total. People were allowed to walk without raising any money, but those who did raise funds received goodie bags and T-shirts.

About 180 attended this year, said C.A.R.E. President Linda Gelb, a turnout on par with previous years, despite Saturday’s rain.

C.A.R.E, 2310 Oakton St., is a nonprofit that works with the Evanston animal shelter to provide services including medicating, vaccinating and finding homes for abandoned animals. The city owns the animal shelter, and C.A.R.E. works on spaying and neutering the animals, testing them for disease and putting them up for adoption, Gelb said.

Though C.A.R.E doen’t pay rent for its space, Gelb said the organization spends about $150 for each animal that comes through and only charges a $100 registration fee. The organization is completely volunteer-based and is open six days a week.

Vickie Taylor, vice president of WAG Animal Rescue, introduces us to Flower the cat and Rosie the dog:

Flower is 8 years old and a total love bug. She is spayed and front declawed. Flower was rescued on her last day at a shelter. She would be perfect for a quiet home where she will get lots of love and petting.

Rosie is a 6-month-old terrier/Chihuahua mix. She is an adorable, happy girl. Her tail constantly wags and she loves to cuddle and be petted. Rosie is spayed and current on vaccinations.

Anyone interested in adopting an animal from WAG is encouraged to visit the group’s website and fill out an application online. The group’s animals are on display every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Livonia PetSmart, 13150 Middlebelt. As not all animals are brought up each week, potential adopters are encouraged to email the group to make arrangements for a particular animal to be available to be seen. An entire list, including photographs and descriptions, of all the group’s adoptable animals can be found on its website.

Memorial Day is coming up and Yavapai Humane Society wants to thank our veterans the only way we know how, by sending every American hero home with a new best friend. In May, adoption fees will be waived for all active and retired military members.

Members of the military are used to saving lives but civilians can help, too. Tell us who you will be thanking for their service this Memorial Day and receive 50% off your adoption from May 11-May 31.

Every adoption from YHS includes a spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchip, complimentary check-up from one of our local veterinary partners, and a month of pet health insurance – over $400 of services. Puppies, purebreds and dogs under 15 pounds are their normal, low adoption fee.
