Meet Daffy, a spunky 6-year-old Toy Fox/Jack Russell Terrier with a new lease on life, but suffering from a mysterious illness. (The Barkers Dozen is currently holding a fundraiser to help Daffy get the medical care she needs – click here to learn more about how you can help.)

The Barkers Dozen first learned about Daffy on Twitter, when our mascot Bobby Barker (@thedailybarker) met the pup (@nocrybabydogs) and enjoyed her playful tweets.

Daffy was also chosen as a treat taste tester during one of The Barkers Dozen’s contests, and helped make the gluten-free Blueberry Bone-anza flavor become the latest in its lineup of organic dog treats. (The blueberry treats are now Daffy’s favorite from The Barkers Dozen.)

But things weren’t always so bright for Daffy, or her mom Ingrid.

Two years before Ingrid met Daffy, her beloved Dachshund BetsyRoss passed away. From that date forward, she prayed that another dog would be sent her way – one that would be right for Ingrid, and one who would be happy with her as a companion.

One day a colleague at Ingrid’s workplace rescued a dog from a bad situation, and asked if she wanted the dog. “Immediately I said ‘no’. After all, the dog didn’t have big brown eyes and long luxurious fur like I’d been used to,” Ingrid said.

Friends, we have an urgent situation on our paws and need your help.  Please pass this on to everyone you know that might be able to help them.  Ginger and Baby Doll are in need of an IMMEDIATE home.  They currently are in Dacula, GA where there Mom has Alzheimers and can no longer care for them since she is now in a nursing home.  The woman’s daughter, highly allergic to cats, and has dogs, has been trying to find a place for them.   No luck.  Her plan, if you can even call it a plan, is to bring them back to Easly, SC and just put them outside with some food and water.

Since they are not outside cats, needless to say, that plan stinks.

Meet Ginger…

Ginger is 10+ years old, is very sweet and is mostly a lap cat.

Meet Baby Doll…

Baby Doll is a tabby around 5 years old. She would do better in a home where she is the only pet.  She has not been very happy since Ginger moved in with them.  Baby doll also does not do well around small children.

Both Ginger and Baby Doll have been spayed and as far as we know are current on their shots.

Sweet Jackie is a 15-year old cat that no one wants to adopt.

She was about to go to the “back room” when Wee Paws offered her a forever home. The problem is she is in California and needs to get to Nevada, which requires about $200 for gas. She is having to be boarded while the money is raised and that costs $15 per day. Plus, she must have a wellness exam which is $200. We know this is a really difficult time of the year to fundraise, but we really do not have a choice!! We have a new kitty needing help!!  I received this email from Tippy’s Foster Mom last night and he is need of eye surgery fairly soon, or he could possibly lose his eye.
 
We are now on a mission to raise $1,000 in a hurry…Tippy has been in foster care most of his life, he is a wonderful cat who just never found the right forever home…but please know, he is well cared for and loved by his foster family!!

I believe everyone is aware of the horrific tornados that have struck in the midwestern United States in recent days. None was worse than the one that made a direct hit on Joplin, Missouri.

The devastation created by this tornado also had an impact on the lives of hundreds of animals, beloved pets ~ many who are now displaced or have become homeless.

We encourage all of you to stop by Tank’s Two Cents, he has inititated PROJECT TOTO to help the Joplin Humane Society.  Their greatest need at the moment is for donations of blankets.  But you can read all about PROJECT TOTO in several recent postings by Tank ~ and if you’re able to do so, donations of blankets will be very welcome at this time.

This is URGENT, her time is up Friday, March 11th.  She needs a home, foster or safe haven.  She has had an FHO (femoral head orthodic) meaning her femoral head has been removed.  She can walk fine but not jump.  She has been in a cage so long her leg where the surgery was is atrophying.  She needs to be able to walk on it and strengthen it so as not to loose it.  Her time us up Friday and we have exhausted all channels on this poor baby.  More details as I get them.  Please ask everyone you know to share with everyone they know.

These beautiful little gals are at Robeson County Animal Control, St Pauls, NC:  I received this urgent plea from our friend Melissa.  Melissa was rescuing Lola, but the poor sweet thing died before she could get her.  These two beautiful lab sisters have a chance, but we need to help them with the funding quickly, there are only 2 days left to save them and we need donations quickly.

Rather than me repeat the story, here is the email I got from Melissa:

I just wanted to thank you all for your kind words yesterday and condolences on the loss of Lola.  It really hit me hard especially when I had never even had the chance to hold or see her, but I am grateful that she had a little love for a little while and that now she is at peace.

I don’t know that I am ready to choose a replacement foster. I need a few days break.  But I realize that these babies die daily and don’t have time to wait for my recovery.  So I have found another woman who is trying to adopt 2 black lab puppies from Robeson Shelter.  She and her son would love to add these little girls to their home.  I have agreed to pledge $100 in Memory of Lola to help her get these babies out of Robeson.  I don’t want them to have to spend another day there if they don’t have to.

So I am thanking you for your support and asking that you consider helping these two girls get to their forever home.  Please share them with others who might be interested and able to help.  They have 2 days!  We will need about $700 for the pair but we need at least $550 to get started and pull them.  With the $100 donation in Honor of Lola, our immediate need is reduced to $450 in 2 days!!!!

Operation Fuzzy Mice was started by Michelle as a welfare outreach for low-income pet owners. Unfortunately Michelle has fallen on hard times and is in desperate need of help for the cats under her care. She may in fact be living in her car, but that won’t work for her foster cats. We need to pull together and help her.

Rather than me trying to explain her dilemma, here is a summary directly from her blog:

From Operation Fuzzy Mice on Sept 10th

Hello, world! Human here. I will simply get to the point; I have received a thirty-day-notice to move yesterday.

Newer fans of Operation Fuzzy Mice may not know my personal life. In short, I am a university student at CSU Bakersfield, lost financial aid due to lack of accommodations for Asperger’s (a different story), developed depression, am unable to work, probably also will not be able to finish school, and social security is pending. Due to an inability to pay rent, I must move.

I am not worried about myself. I can store my things and sleep in my car, and this project mission can continue. However, I will no longer be able to foster the many cats who were grandfathered in from Michelle’s Cats. They cannot live in the car with me. I have thirty days to place them all, otherwise they’s have to go to the county shelter because everyone else is full. Taking them to the shelter is an almost guaranteed euthanization due to overcrowding.

I turn to the internet community as well as local Bakersfield communities for help finding homes. It won’t be easy – if homes were available they would have been placed long ago – but if everybody helps to spread the news it will increase chances.

Of course, if housing becomes available, then the animals would certainly move there with me. But, let’s be real here. Kern County and much of the rest of California is economically depressed. This makes finding animal-friendly housing with no income highly unlikely. I would much rather prepare for the worst and make sure the animals are taken care of.

There are all ages and colors and personality types available. Most have been fixed and immunized through donor funding. The adoption fee is $10*. Transportation may be available depending on location.

(*Adoption fees safeguard against dogfighters and animal hoarders. Fees will be paid towards CareCredit, which funds OFM’s vet care. )
