Little Luna was found with her litter mates on Cleveland’s East side.

Luna had a rough start and was sick for several months. After medication, love and patience Luna is healthy and ready to go to her new home!

Because Luna was ill as a kitten, she is smaller than the average cat. Don’t let her small size fool you! Little Luna loves to play and even takes down her stepsister, a 14-pound cat! Luna may be a bit shy at first (as you can see, she’s even camera shy!), but give her a couple weeks to warm up and she’ll be purring on your lap and at your feet, just begging to be picked up.

She absolutely loves to be held and cuddled. Luna is a happy-go-lucky cat and gets along with everyone. She is not confrontational, and is happy in the company of other cats and even dogs.

Poor little Poppy was a very dirty, very hungry, very scared, undernourished female who was left in a carrier on a cat-friendly family’s doorstep. Her sibling escaped when a young boy opened the carrier.

Lucky Poppy was brought to a PAWS volunteer neighbor where she has cleaned up, filled out and become a very playful, friendly little kitten. Now 9-10 months old (probably born late July 2011), Poppy is looking for her forever home, hopefully with a playmate her own age. Pick precious Poppy today!

Eloise the coonhound probably will be glad when the construction on the large-dog adoption area finally concludes at the Lucas County Dog Warden pound.

The energetic dog with a spotted coat is one of the larger dogs displaced by the closing of the room, in which a new floor and drainage system is being installed.

When she first went up for adoption in January, she had one of the large kennels in the large-dog adoption area. As of late, Eloise is making do with a smaller cage in what was the pound’s original adoption area.

Construction began Feb. 21 and was projected to be completed by March 21 but is still under way.

Dog Warden Julie Lyle said she was told that concrete poured on March 19 needs to cure for 10 days before work can continue. She has not been given a new completion date, she said.

Midwest Contracting Inc. of Holland is not charging for the new floor, because it was not installed properly originally, Ms. Lyle said.

But the new drainage system is an additional expense.

The Lucas County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved on Jan. 3 the expenditure of $28,373, which when added to the original construction amount of $115,600, brings the total to $143,973.

We aren’t the only ones suffering in a bad economy… sometimes pets go hungry too! Through the month of March, Summit County officials are asking residents to consider making pet food and cat litter donations to local fire stations.

The pet food drive will benefit the Humane Society of Greater Akron, Summit County Animal Control and many animal rescue operations countywide.

“The Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank just kicked off their annual Harvest for Hunger campaign,” said Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic. “It’s important we also remember the needs of our pets as well.”

Donations are accepted at the Twinsburg Fire Department Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. as part of a St. Pet’s Day effort. If no one is there to accept your donation, please follow up at another time.

Local rescue groups in need of assistance are asked to call Summit County Animal Control at 330-643-8258. Last year, Summit County residents donated more than 15,000 pounds of food and pet supplies.

The League for Animal Welfare, a no-kill animal shelter in Batavia, OH, will host a March Meowness Cat Adoption Event Friday, March 2, 2012, through Sunday, March 11, 2012. During this time only, cat adoption fees for all cats will be reduced to $35. Additionally, with every cat adoption, you will receive a free gift bag filled with cat food, treats, toys, and more! All adoptions include vaccinations, spay/neuter, vet checks, micro-chips, and tests for FIV and Feline Leukemia. The event is sponsored by Highland Heights Animal Hospital.

“Adopting out cats in this tough economy is difficult, but even more challenging is matching the right cat with the right home,” said Joyce Blersch, League for Animal Welfare board member. “If you’re considering adding a cat to your family, then now is the time,” Blersch adds.

The League for Animal Welfare has more than 60 cats looking for their “fur-ever” homes.

When a Love-A-Stray volunteer recently went to McDonalds, she got way more than a Big Mac Attack.

She got Mickey.

The volunteer found the tabby, who appears to have some Maine Coon in him, in the parking lot. She brought him to Love-A-Stray’s shelter in Avon, and he’s ready for adoption.

Mickey, estimated to be a year and a half old, doesn’t appear to be a big run-around-and-play cat. But he’s very affectionate, loves being held and especially loves being petted and getting scritched around his chin and neck.

The Tuscarawas County Humane Society’s biggest fundraiser of the year will be at the Performing Arts Center at Kent State University Tuscarawas 6-9 p.m. March 3.

The Cause for Paws Charity Auction Gala features hors d’ oeuveres, desserts, music, a cash bar, and live and silent auction items.

Tickets are $35 per person, or two for $60. Tickets are available by calling the TCHS shelter at 330-343-6060, the cat shelter on Union Ave in Dover at 330-602-6762, Renaissance Salon at 330-602-1700 or Wallick’s Hairstyling at 330-339-6619.
