Say hello to Huey, a tabby and white, short-haired male kitten. Huey is part of a family we call the “Donald Duck” litter. Born in early September, Huey and siblings were found motherless, and hand-raised by PAWS volunteers.

The other kittens are Dewey, a solid black, short-haired male; Louie, a black and white, short-haired male; and Daisy, a black and white, short-haired female. They all run to greet you, and will cuddle, play and keep you laughing. You will fall in love with each and every one!

Finding Frisky or Fido a new home is the focus of a potential partnership between the Lawrence County Animal Shelter and a local pet lover.

Private citizen Cyndi Anderson recently approached the Lawrence County Commissioners and dog warden Bill Click about a partnership that would create a website and other publicity efforts all designed to help the shelter find homes for its animals before they are euthanized.

The animal shelter is often filled well beyond capacity with sometimes as many as 90 animals brought in each week. Although the shelter does what it can to find homes for these dogs and cats, the reality is that many have to be put to sleep.

Of course, the best solution would be to address the root of the problem by encouraging and helping more pet owners to spay and neuter their animals. But the second component of that is to do everything possible to find homes for these animals.

The Tribune will lend a hand by resuming the publication of a “pet of the week” feature in its Sunday editions.

Since this partnership will have virtually no cost to taxpayers and concerned citizens like Anderson are willing to step up to the challenge of organizing this effort, this is a positive move for Lawrence County.

If even one animal can find a good home or one child can receive the pet he or she has always dreamed of, then this will be time well spent.

Meet Elliott and Mickey, two terrific little kittens who could use a little luck and love in their lives. Week after week, they languish in the PetSmart cages, longing for someone to look their way, fall in love and take them home. They are both such great kitties!

Elliott is about 8 months old. He has a beautiful tabby top and tail, and a luxurious white front, face and boots. He is wonderfully affectionate and loves kids, adults, some cats and is okay with dogs. Elliott adores attention. He will curl up on his foster mommy for chin rubs and ear rubs and just purr up a storm. He loves attention and will follow you from room to room to get some.

Elliott’s best friend, Mickey, is about 10 months old with glossy black hair and glowing green eyes. He is a wonderful kitty! He loves kids, adults, cats and dogs. Mickey gets along well with everyone. Mickey is very active and needs a playmate because his activity level is so high. He loves to race around, run up and down the cat perches, chase the laser light and have wrestling matches with Elliott. Mickey also loves affection, and will lay down beside you for a nice nap or when it’s time for bed.

There are a lot of empty cages at the animal shelter in Zanesville thanks to another successful free cat adoption day.

The shelter waived the $50 adoption fee for cats to help relieve some overcrowding. WHIZ caught up with cat owners waiting in line on Saturday.

“I noticed it in the paper yesterday that they were giving them out for free, and I already have cats,” said Audrey Ford. “I’m actually the owner of two cats, so I just thought I would come pick up another one.”

“There are so many people here!” said Susan Morgan. “They probably have gotten rid of a lot, because the cages are all empty. It was such a good idea.”

“I love cats, and I want to get a cat,” said Kathy Chapman. “I’m trying to decide which one I want, because I can only have one.”

If your kids are complaining that they didn’t get a pet for Christmas, Saturday is the perfect opportunity to change that.

The animal shelter in Zanesville is giving away free cats to good homes. Executive Director Larry Hostetler said it’s cost effective for the shelter to waive the adoption fees rather than caring for the animals for an extended period of time.

“Financially it’s very hard because we put a lot of money into spaying, neutering and all of the medical care, but at this point, we are looking at a down season for kittens,” said Hostetler. “There aren’t many kittens coming in, and we look at how much it’s going to cost us to care for the animals over the next few weeks, so you just have to balance things out.”

This is the third time the shelter has been able to hold a free cat adoption day, and Hostetler said the first two events were very successful.

Local celebrities are lending their voices to the effort to find homes for the hundreds of dogs and cats at the Cleveland Animal Protective League and offering several prizes that have not yet been revealed.

The APL says that sports fans, news junkies and local foodies will be excited about the promotions.

First up is sports talk radio host Bruce Drennan, who is promoting dog adoption through Jan. 16 and offering a chance to sit in on a live taping of his show.

“My wife, Jackie, and I have a very special place in our hearts for dogs. We simply adore them,” Drennan said in a news release. “They give so much joy, companionship and love and ask for nothing in return. We refer to our dogs as our four-legged children because it doesn’t take long for them to find a way into your heart as a true family member.”

Rescued by a good Samaritan with his brother, Frosty is a large, 4-year-old male. He has a thick, luxurious solid white coat and the most lovely blue eyes.

Unlike many white cats, Frosty has perfect hearing. Frosty is always so happy to see you. He loves to sit on the sofa with you or hop up in bed with you at night. Although affectionate, Frosty does not like to be held.

He’s a sweet, mellow fellow who is quite fond of his brother, Golden Eyes. Perhaps you’d consider two cats to warm your heart and home this holiday season?

Shirley Ratcliff started out just wanting to help find homes for one litter of kittens and their mother in 2007.

A local veterinarian told Ratcliff the owner had asked for the adult cat and its four kittens to be euthanized. The owner didn’t want them and couldn’t find a shelter that would take them.

“I’d always done it sort of on my own. I live in the country and cats would show up and I would find them homes,” Ratcliff said.

She said the group was adopted within two days after she placed a sign downtown advertising free kittens . Having always been a cat lover, Ratcliff continued trying to help out where possible.

“In the beginning, we did it real slow. Then when the vets found out, it kept getting bigger and bigger,” she said.
