Several dogs from Lollypop Farm will be available for adoption during the event.

It’s hard not to change the channel when Sarah McLaughlin sings “In the Arms of an Angel” as heartbreaking pictures cascade across your TV of animals that can’t fend for themselves. That sadness passes, though, and many return to their lives without ever thinking “I can change that.” It seems that the idea of changing such large issues like animal cruelty awareness and increased support of pet adoption shelters can’t happen with one person, but could you find me the quote that says one person can’t make a difference? Whether on a small scale or a large scale, the steps a person can take in helping domesticated animals is going to make a difference to that animal or the local shelter, possibly even that elderly couple that is having trouble feeding their cat. Or maybe the family that has lost their puppy after a hurricane and someone found her and brought her to a local shelter in hopes her owner would soon find her again.

All too often humane societies and animal shelters have more animals than they can efficiently take care of and provide for. Do they stop taking animals? In most cases, no, they scrimp and save to do the best that they can to help these homeless animals, keeping arms open for needy pets. They rely so much on donations and volunteers in order to keep these potential pets from meeting an unfortunate fate. With seemingly more pet shops with cute purebred puppies than animal shelters helping abandoned and mistreated animals, so many loving families overlook adopting a cute little “fella” yearning for some loving arms and a permanent home.

Though HEART Animal Rescue and Adoption Team Inc. is currently caring for nearly 200 cats, Sharon Gorman, vice president and rescue coordinator of the non-profit organization, can identify most of them by name, personality and the story of how they came to HEART.

Gorman does not have a photographic memory, rather, getting to know the strays on an individual level is typical of HEART volunteers.

“We care about our animals so much,” said Gorman.

In October, the pet adoption center moved to 48 Buffalo St. in Hamburg, allowing its cats more room to stretch, roam and play.

“We absolutely love it here,” said Gorman, who keeps around 15 cats at the site at a time, and shelters the rest in foster homes and stores such as PetSmart.

The no-kill organization also takes in stray dogs and other domestic animals, such as rabbits. However, while it pains volunteers turn an animal away, HEART only accepts injured and sick animals in need of emergency care.

A free winter rabies clinic for dogs, cats and ferrets will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Tompkins County SPCA Pet Adoption Center, 1640 Hanshaw Road.

Owners should bring a certificate of vaccination for all pets receiving a booster shot. If no proof is provided, the certificate will expire in one year.

The clinic is a service of the Tompkins County Health Department. Questions can be directed to the Environmental Health Division at 274-6688.

The Animal Care and Control organization is offering deals to make it easier for New Yorkers to adopt a pet for the holidays.

Those who want to adopt a new cat can adopt a second cat from the ACC free of charge.

Adoption prices are also half-off for dogs aged one year and older.

The deals are designed to encourage New Yorkers to consider adopting homeless animals this holiday season.

ACC officials say 35,000 cats, dogs and rabbits are rescued each year.

Five of the ‘caged cats’ found at Sands Point Preserve earlier this month were adopted during the Glen Cove Animal Lovers League Cat Adoption Drive at Petco on Saturday, Nov. 26, and Sunday, Nov. 27.

Volunteers said they are grateful for the community’s help in finding new homes for the cats, who were mistreated and locked in cages without food or water.

Despite their treatment, most of the cats have been nursed back to health and are well tempered, acording to shelter staff. They said the cats make “perfect” holiday gifts, and come with a unique story behind their rescue.

Police and Nassau County officials are still investigating, and have not yet commented on suspects or charges.

The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society says it is overflowing with cats and kittens. The animal shelter says it is currently taking care of more than 243 cats, 87 of which are currently in volunteer foster homes.

To help the animals find a home, the shelter is announcing its third annual Cats-giving Adoption Drive. From Friday, Nov. 25 through Sunday, Nov. 27, the adoption fee for cats age six months and up will be waived and every cat and kitten 6 months and older will be free.

Kittens up to 6 months will go for $25. The offer is also available at MHHS satellite adoption centers at PetSmart stores in Latham and Glenmont.
