“June is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month and Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoptions Center is hoping this promotion will increase cat adoptions plus make room for the influx of cats and kittens that inevitably arrive at the shelter in spring,” said Freeholder Len Desiderio.

Throughout June, the adoption fee for cats will be reduced by half.

This month, the shelter is offering an early bird special. Through May 31, adoption fees for cats over 1 years old is $10.

“If you have been considering making a feline addition to your home, now is the time,” said Sheriff Gary Schaffer. “Unfortunately as kittens begin to arrive the adults are overlooked. Our goal is to encourage adoptions of older cats.”

Cat adoptions include spay/neuter procedure, vaccinations, de-worming, flea control, microchipping, cat carrier, PetSmart coupons worth $160 and a free vet visit.

The Cape May County Animal Shelter & Adoption Center is in the Crest Haven Complex at 110 Shelter Road in Cape May Court House.

The facility is open seven days a week for adoptions and visitors from noon to 4 p.m. Also, cats from the shelter are available for adoption at the PetSmart store in Rio Grande.

Her mother was left behind when her owner moved out of an apartment building. While looking for food she must have been hit by a car, yet she dragged herself back to feed her kittens in the building she lived in. The mother was rescued along with her babies and after numerous operations to fix her broken hips and back legs she is now ready to find a new “forever home.”

Rebecca and her brother, Ryan, have bonded and they need to be adopted together.

Homeless Animal Rescue is having an adoption event at the adoption center at PetSmart, 187 Millburn Ave., Saturday, May 19, and Sunday, May 20, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. each day. There will be kittens from 6 months of age and up and as well as adult cats looking for homes.

All of the cats are negative for Aids/FeLV, and up to date on shots.

Volunteers are needed to help with cleaning the cats’ cages at the Pet Adoption Center.

During the month of May, targeted cats at the CCSPCA will be available for adoption for only $30! In our country, anyone accused of a crime is considered “innocent until proven guilty.”

Unfortunately, this is not the case for the millions of homeless animals in our country. Every day, hundreds of animals are imprisoned in animal shelters. These animals do not receive the luxury of a trial, probation is not an option, and they have no idea how long their sentence is or what awaits them at the end of their time. Worst of all, the only crime these animals have committed is the crime of being homeless.

Life in the animal shelter is actually very comparable to life in prison. At Cumberland County SPCA, we strive to give our animals the best care possible, including plenty of good food, medical care, and enrichment; but they are still behind bars and there is still confinement and there is still a great deal of loneliness and heartache for the animals.

To make matters worse, now juvenile delinquents (also known as kittens) are flooding the shelter, taking up space and stealing adopters from our adult cats! To be fair, the kittens are just as much in need of a good adoption intervention as our adult cats. However, we have some adults that are seriously in need of some redemption, so throughout the month of May we are having a “Post My Bail” adoption special for targeted adult cats that urgently need to be adopted. You can come to the shelter and post $30 bail for one of these cats and spring them from prison and save their life! Once your application is approved (maybe it already is!) they are ready to go! No red tape, no bureaucracy, no bail hearings — just get out the door and go home!

As part of the school’s Character Counts program, students in Carrie Gammoh’s third-grade class conducted a fundraiser to benefit the Sayreville Pet Adoption Center on Main Street.

“Every year, our school has a theme and this year’s theme is Character Counts at Wilson School,” Gammoh said. “Every month there is a different character trait that is emphasized.”

March’s theme was “encouraging,” she said.

Pet lovers and their families participated in “Spring Fling,” an annual pet adoption event in Manahawkin on Saturday. Hosted by the Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter in both Toms River and in the southern facility at 360 Haywood Road today, the event facilitates community awareness and offers yet another chance for dozens of the shelters’ furry residents to go home for good.

The Southern facility houses approximately 35 dogs at full capacity and between 100 to 130 cats and/or kittens, according to Ocean County Animal Facilities spokesman Brian Lippai. “With kitten season almost in full swing that number will swell,” Lippai said.

The Northern Ocean County Animal Facility receives 4,000 to 5,000 animals per year and can house about 45 dogs at any given time.

“We are usually at full capacity from April to mid-November,” Lippai said.

The animals for adoption are always spayed or neutered, micro-chipped and vaccinated.

Bunny, like many of us with imperfections, is making the best of who she is and what she’s got. The sweet-tempered Staffie mix is about six months old, with a whole lifetime ahead of her.

Affectionate Bunny is wonderful with people, including kids. She needs training, but even before that, she needs a loving home. Right now, Bunny lives at the Ewing Animal Shelter, where she’s beginning to show the signs of stress that dogs sometimes experience in shelter situations.

Bunny has just one good eye. When she was brought to the shelter as a stray, her right eye was closed. A visit to an eye specialist indicated the eyeball is non-functional for reasons that could only be guessed at. (Her left eye has slightly impaired vision but should not worsen.)

Bunny is one of the half-dozen or so dogs and 20-some cats and kittens who will be at the Trenton Farmers Market this Saturday, all looking for adoptive families. Members of EASEL Animal Rescue League will bring the animals there from the Ewing Shelter — and they’d like nothing more than to return to the shelter empty-handed.

Bella and Angel are two of the cats who will be available for adoption on Saturday. Each has special reasons for needing a happy home and both respond to the loving touch of caregivers.

Bella, a petite black-fur beauty, is very shy and equally sweet. She was surrendered to the shelter because she was being intimidated by the family’s aggressive cats. Around two years old, Bella’s a sensitive girl and needs gentle handling. When she’s held close, she purrs contentedly.

Angel, a blue-eyed Siamese-Calico mix nearly two years old, was close to death from starvation when she came to the shelter. She was nursed and loved back to full health, and now she’s ready to move to her forever home. She actively seeks attention and petting, and like Bella, will thrive in a gentle environment.

On Saturday, April 14th, New Providence Girl Scout Troop 45878 held a Bake Sale at the Millburn PetSmart. The event ran concurrently with the Summit, NJ based Home for Good Dog Rescue adoption event. Girl Scout Troop 45878 comprises of 19 girls, ranging from 9 to 10 years in age. The majority of the girls participated in the event, either by baking and/or working the bake sale table. The bake sale was a community service project for the girls who are working for a merit badge.

Christine Weber, a mother of one of the scouts and a Home for Good volunteer, coordinated the girl’s efforts. Christine serves as the troop’s GS cookie manager. When asked about the bake sale, Christine replied “I thought that this was an incredible event. I am very pleased that we raised over $500 for the HFG rescue.” Christine’s daughter Alyssa concurred, adding “I liked that I could be with the dogs. I think it was the best idea ever.” Girls Scout Brooke Arnold stated “I thought that this was a fantastic experience. I had a great time seeing all the dogs and all the people that donated.”

Petey is 1- year-old male American pit bull terrier, with white fur and several dark brindle markings. He came to the Cape May County Animal Shelter as a stray that may have been abandoned by his owners. Petey is playful, enjoying games and toys and chasing balls. He is friendly and well-mannered, and he knows a number of commands. Petey loves going for walks and needs a little more leash training. Because of his size and strength, Petey is not recommended for a family with children under the age of 6. The shelter says Petey does not like cats and appears to not like other dogs as well. Petey’s adoption fee is $95 and he is up-to-date with routine shots and neutered.

Fat Cat is a sweet, loving, older cat, and she loves attention, shelter volunteers say. Fat Cat’s owner had to move, and she was not allowed to move in with them. Fat Cat gets along well with other cats and children. She gets nervous around dogs. Her sister, Little Cat, is also at the shelter. Fat Cat’s adoption fee is $20, and she is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed.

Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center is at 110 Shelter Road in the Crest Haven Complex, Cape May Court House, NJ.
