Thinking of adopting a cat this holiday season?

If so, there are cats of all sizes, colors, breeds and temperament at the New Albany-Floyd County Animal Shelter. There are so many cats that 12 are being given away as part of the “Twelve Strays of Christmas” campaign while the regular adoption fee is only $20 for a cat.

“We’re desperate. We need to place some of these cats,” said Theresa Stilger, animal care coordinator at the shelter. “We have some of the sweetest cats that we’ve ever had here. And we’ve had some for a year.”

The shelter lowered its cat adoption fee to $20 six months ago to try and thin out the population.

Like many shoppers on Black Friday, Suzanne Kim got up early and stood in line.

But when the doors opened, she didn’t rush inside to buy a television, iPad or laptop computer.

The Noblesville woman sat down, relaxed and filled out an application to adopt a dog. She went through a brief interview then walked through the kennels.

Right away, Kim was drawn to a 5-year-old Labrabull and took her home the next day. Last weekend, she officially adopted the American pit bull terrier/Labrador retriever at the Humane Society for Hamilton County.

“When we saw Pearl, we didn’t want to look any further,” said Kim, who was drawn to the canine’s loving personality. “She immediately came to us.” While Kim had planned to wait until Christmas to adopt, she said, the $15 Black Friday promotion gave her an extra nudge to adopt now. “It turned out perfect,” she said. The special-education teacher at Belzer Middle School in Lawrence Township, who’s married and has two daughters, ages 17 and 19, said the 90-pound dog quickly bonded with their family.

The Humane Society for Hamilton County will open a new satellite adoption center at Hamilton Town Center Mall on Sept. 3.

The grand opening is 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 13901 Town Center Boulevard, Noblesville. The 1,951-square-foot center will feature shelter dogs and cats for adoption and raffle prizes from Three Dog Bakery. KJ from WZPL’s Smiley Morning Show will be on-site from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“For anyone who has visited the shelter in the last few months, they know how full and overwhelmed we have been with a non-stop flow of animal intakes,” Rebecca Stevens, the shelter’s executive director said today in a press release. “That is why this satellite location is such a blessing to us in that we believe it will create many more adoption opportunities for our animals.”

Downtown South Bend was taken over by man’s best friend Friday as part of Downtown South Bend, Inc.’s First Fridays events. Teaming up with PetsConnect! the theme of Friday’s event, “Dog Days of Summer,” was to promote local pet adoption.

There were six areas set up by the College Football Hall of Fame gridiron, all offering on-the-spot adoption, according to Susie Harty a volunteer with PetsConnect!.

“This year is really about awareness,” Harty said. “That’s why we invited rescues from all over.”

People may not realize just how many pets there are that need good homes, she said. Events like this will hopefully make people aware, but most importantly find dogs homes.

A Mishawaka toy store held its first ever Pet Adoption Day on Sunday.

Imagine That! Toy Store brought in animals from the South Bend Animal Control Center on put them on display for prospective pet owners.

The owners of store said they were inspired to hold this event by their own dog –a rescue.

“We had a dog that had been abused and poisoned and that we were fostering so that it would not be put to sleep,” said,” said store owner Courtney Donahue.

The price of adopting an adult cat from the New Albany Floyd County Animal Shelter would be slashed 60 percent under an ordinance approved Thursday by the New Albany City Council.

The adult cat adoption fee, now $50, would be reduced to $20. And, people interested in adopting dogs would be able to take one home for a trial run before making a final commitment.

The ordinance still requires approval from the Floyd County Commissioners who are expected to take up the measure at their July 19 meeting.

Jeanne Sommers said her efforts in helping to establish the Lakeshore PAWS pet adoption group has moved ahead much more quickly than she expected.

The group has found homes for the equivalent of one dog a day since it was formed in May and is now hopeful it can build a shelter within the next year or two.

Yet, the move may end up testing the generosity of pet lovers across the county.

Porter County Commissioner Nancy Adams, R-Center, said she too may turn to fundraising over the next year or so to generate at least part of the money needed to replace the county’s aging and cramped shelter along Ind. 2, south of U.S. 30.

“I think we can raise quite a bit,” she said.

PetsConnect! will play host to a series of adoption events called the Mad March Meow Mixers from noon to 4 p.m. every Sunday in March at PetSmart, 4540 Grape Road. The public can enjoy tea and cookies while meeting the felines available for adoption from the all-volunteer pet rescue organization.

All the cats and kittens in the PetsConnect! program are fostered in homes, some with children, most with dogs and all with other cats. They are neutered, up to date on their shots, treated for parasites and tested for feline leukemia.

The adoption fee for a cat or kitten is $75.

Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control has found a new way to find homes for its many four-legged friends.

A mobile pet adoption unit called the Whisker Wag’n takes animals who need homes to area locations, such as PETCO, so more people will have a chance to meet them without driving to Animal Control, 3020 Hillegas Road.

“We went to ‘The Nutcracker’ this year, and all 13 of the animals we brought were adopted,” said Allison Miller, adoption supervisor for Animal Care and Control.

Earlier this month a family came into the South Suburban Humane Society crying.

Their economic situation had forced them to move from their home into an apartment. They had searched for a pet-friendly apartment but couldn’t find one, said Emily Klehm, director of the Chicago Heights humane society.

They were at the shelter to give up their 7-year-old dog. They had no choice.

“The last couple of months we’ve had several heartbreaking stories,” Klehm said.

The scene has been lived over and over in region animal shelters: Families surrendering their beloved pets because they’ve lost their homes and can’t take the pet with them.
