As a professional food stylist, Cathy Paukner is accustomed to whipping up delicious recipes that taste as good as they look. Along with her culinary skills, the Easton resident is adept with animals. For 10 years, Ms. Paukner has held volunteer posts at PAWS (Pet Animal Welfare Society), a nonprofit organization in Norwalk that rescues and finds homes for homeless dogs and cats.

Last spring Ms. Paukner launched Cupcakes for a Cause, a part-time business that donates a portion of its proceeds to PAWS. “My passions are food and animals,” Ms. Paukner said. “What better way is there to combine these two interests?”

Ms. Paukner’s cupcakes are available in 16 flavors and in three different sizes — miniature, regular and jumbo. The Red Velvet Cupcake and the Carrot Cake Cupcake are two of her most requested treats. By the Sea, a chocolate cupcake topped with caramel frosting with a sprinkle of sea salt, and a Samoa Cupcake, modeled after the famous Girl Scouts cookie of the same name, are also popular, Ms. Paukner said.

“I find that cupcakes are a wonderful, whimsical alternative dessert,” she noted.

All her cupcakes are made to order. “Nothing is frozen,” she said. When placing an order, customers may mix different flavors. “Our standard cupcake is a tad bigger than most,” Ms. Paukner said.

A cat adoption event, with a food and supply drive, will take place Sunday, March 18, at Choice Pet Supply in Monroe, 535 Monroe Tpke. FeralCare will be present with cats for adoption from noon to 4 p.m. This event is sponsored by North Shore Animal League.

Fancy Feast, Friskies and cat and kitten Chow food donations will be accepted, as are supply donations of paper towels, laundry detergent and clean linens in good condition. The collected items benefit the cats that FeralCare helps. If you’re looking for a pet, drop into the Connecticut Humane Society’s Waterford branch and have a look around. They have dogs, cats and the occasional small animal.

The animal shelter is located at 169 Old Colchester Road and is open Monday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dog adoption hours begin at 10:30 a.m. The phone number is 860-442-8583.

Humane Society employee Hailey St. Pierre-Casati introduced us to these animals this week:

Bleu, a handsome American Pit Bull mix,

Tabitha, a beautiful short-haired Siamese cat

and Bob, a laid back green parrot.

Animals are adopted and dropped off at the Humane Society on a daily basis so if you see an animal in this video who you want, act fast. If you miss your chance however, these ones are still waiting for someone to bring them home:

Fang is a very friendly and affectionate cat who would love to hang out on laps all day long,

Titan, a big dog who can live with cats and children,

and Valentino, a well-behaved bunny who was found on Valentine’s Day.

Grooming, training, exercise, past pets, visiting children – the application to adopt a dog from the Meriden Humane Society leaves little out.

An animal shelter in Southington, Best Friends for Life Animal Rescue, also has a multi-page form and requires home visits and references from veterinarians.

Shelter workers say the screening is necessary to keep dogs from ending up back in a shelter or on the streets.

“I want to give you an animal that’s going to fit right into your home with no problems,” said Humane Society director Marlena DiBianco. “We want to make sure it’s the right person for the right animal.”

Others balk at the stringent requirements for adopting a pet. Scott Conover, manager of One Stop Pet Shop in Wallingford, said he has customers who were denied adoption at a shelter because they had children or because they never owned a pet.

Thirteen dogs that were removed from an Old Saybrook home earlier this week are now up for adoption.

In total, nine puppies, two “teenager” dogs, the mother and the father were rescued from the home on Ford Drive. All of the dogs are pit bull mixes.

Well over 100 people visited the animal shelter Sunday, making it the largest pet adoption day ever in Old Saybrook.

“I think they’re all beautiful,” said Tiffany DeGreco, of East Hartford, “they all have their own personalities. I mean I haven’t been here that long, but they’re all very cute.”

“I was really upset,” said Ashley Bongiomi, of Deep River. “I’m a really big animal person and I wish I could take all of them. And today we saw the adoption signs so we turned around and came in.”

The dogs are recovering very well thanks to quality love and care.

“We’ve had overwhelming support from the residents of not only Old Saybrook, but surrounding communities,” said Police Chief Michael Spera. “Bringing supplies which we desperately need and coming to adopt the animals.”

The Old Saybrook Police run the animal shelter and it’s a very in-depth adoption procedure, including an in-home visit. The process takes approximately 10 to 14 days.

It will be another eight to nine weeks before the youngest puppies are old enough to be adopted.

The staff at the Branford Animal Shelter would like to share our joy with our community of having so many dog and cat adoptions recently. We had our breast cancer surviver, ten year old Sookie, the rat terrier, go to her forever home. We also had Lucy who was on petfinder as urgent because she has been here for a year, go to her forever home as well. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the people who adopted our animals and to everyone who has spread the word about them to help them get adopted.

Besides the two of them we have had about four more dog adoptions recently and we have many pending. Also we have had many cat adoptions as well. Looks like we had a thanksgiving miracle at the Branford Animal Shelter!

Animals for Life, a non-profit animal rescue organization, will hosts its annual pet adoption and holiday celebration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at Nonnewaug High School, 5 Minortown Rd., Woodbury.

Craft vendors may still occupy a table at the event.

The celebration will feature cats, kittens, dogs and puppies who are all eager to find their forever families.

Gerty is a 4-year-old cat looking for a “nice comfy lap to lay on and get lots of attention”.

Snoflake, Ol’Blue and Bat Bird are 4-year-old parakeets looking for a home where they can stay together and have someone sing songs to them.

Tucker is a very happy and friendly dog “who likes the ladies.”

The weather is calling for snow and a new pet makes a warm addition to the family.

Animals for Life

Animals for Life is a no-kill animal shelter located at 1 Service Road, Middlebury.

According to the Animals for Life website, the shelter helps cats and dogs get adopted into forever homes.

“Every pet in our care receives a veterinary examination, vaccinations and is spayed or neutered prior to adoption,” the website stated.

Those interested in adopting a pet may visit the shelter. Dogs and puppies of varied ages, sizes and breeds are available for viewing at the shelter. Several cats and kittens are available at the shelter.

Here are some photos taken by Susan Glassman of A Family Pet Expo, an event held at East Granby Farms Saturday for Anna Glassman’s Girl Scout Gold Award Project.

The event, an unmitigated success, featured some 13 different, mostly animal-related vendors, including two pet adoption shelters.

Demonstrations, including a police dog from the Farmington Police Department, were also held, as well as dog agility tests, contests and games.

Several applications put submitted to Mary’s Kitty Korner (MKK does not do same-day adoptions) for cats, and some of the adoptable dogs have been asked for.

There were many donations as well; Brooke DePamphilis – pictured front and center – heard about the event and asked that her friends bring donations for Mary’s Kitty Korner for her birthday in lieu of presents.

“I was very impressed that a 17 year old put together this wonderful event,” said Deanne Raymond of Deanne Raymond’s Pet Parade. “Dogs and people are out here today, happy and having a great time. This has been a wonderful way to end the fall.”
