Palm Springs, California: The well-behaved corgi mix at Thursday’s Rancho Mirage City Council meeting barked only once, when the leader of the high school color guard bearing the flag said, “Present colors.”
A 4-month-old dachshund-spaniel puppy wriggled and licked a Riverside County animal control worker in the next back-row seat.
The dogs were soon called up to the front of the chamber by Mayor Pro Tem Dana Hobart, who solicited kisses from them as he told the audience the city will cover the fees for any resident who adopts from the Riverside County Department of Animal Services’ Thousand Palms shelter.
Due to overcrowding at the shelter, the dogs could be euthanized within the week if they were not adopted, he said,
“That’s the third or fourth time I’ve done that,” Hobart said Friday.
“I have them bring a couple of dogs in, and if they don’t get adopted, I don’t really want to know about it.”
Rancho Mirage has paid for the adoption of 49 pets since May 2009, according to the city.
Act now and you can get a cat that is 7 years old or older for $35 instead of the usual $100 adoption fee through the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center.
The center at 28095 Hillcrest, which also serves Aliso Viejo and Laguna Niguel, has extended its August cat adoption promotion through Sept. 17.
The fee covers each cat’s vaccination and microchip.

Tom and Jerry are 10 months old grey Tabbies whose mother which was feral got killed by a car. Kind people trapped the kittensand called Paw Parent. They are living here now and have a great time but would love to have a whole apartment or house to roam and play in. Here they are in a roomfull of other cats. They could not be more different in personality. Tom is the shy one and still does not trust people. He can be petted but first you have to be able to get him. While Jerry is quite the opposite. Once he knows and trusts you he is the PURR-MACHINE!!! Even before you touch him he will start his little engine. He is so affectionate and sweet and loves to cuddle up next to you. He is so beautiful too: long bushy tail and this cute little round face

Little Paco was devestated when he had to leave the only home he had ever known.
Simon and Garfunkel came from the streets, born to a feral mother. Thank God, kind people trapped them all and had them fixed, then asked Paw Parent to take the kittens. Aren’t they gorgeous? They are about 8 months old now and so very sweet. A little shy around people still, especially Garfunkel the grey one, but will never fight or scratch. They do like to get petted and love each other as you can see in the pictures. They are both very gentle, mellow and quiet. They are great using the litter box! They are both neutered and have their shots. They also both tested negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia.

Emmy is a very sweet girl that loves to run after the laser toy but she’s also very fond of taking naps either in a sunny window by herself or at the foot of the bed with you which is one of her favorite things to do. This cutie was rescued from near starvation and living in a parking lot when we found her. Back then she was very thin and had to fight to get anything to eat. These days Emmy is on a diet and trying to keep her girlish figure under control. Emmy does well with other younger quieter kitties maybe because she likes to be the mom, but she would really like to be the only adult in her new home. I?m cute, fun, SUPER playful, SUPER active, SUPER inquisitive and just a great little boy. Like most kittens my age I?m usually on the move playing with one of my many toys, chasing one of my foster friends (especially Gracy) or getting into or on top of something to see everything. I like other kitties as long as they have a lot of energy and can keep up with me and I?ve recently discovered dogs.
