Woof! We’re AbbyLou and Gizmo, a pair of dachshund mixes. We are brother and sister and we are bonded. We sleep together, play together and share laps together as often as we can! We were born in 2010 and turned into rescue by a family who could no longer afford to feed us. We were quite skinny when we were surrendered but we are putting on weight, fully vaccinated & spayed/neutered now. We will be microchipped prior to adoption. We are good with other dogs, cats and with children. We are hoping to be placed together and adoption fees will be greatly reduced if we can go to the same home. We are kennel and dog door trained. We are SOOOOOOO cute!

Tucson: holiday pet adoption special – PACC

When at Pima Animal Care Center, look for a snowman or santa sticker on kennel cards. These dogs and cats have been sponsored and the adopting family only needs to pay a small fee of $15. Such a holiday deal!

If you are not able to adopt but would like to assist with long term dogs finding their forever homes, consider making a small donation. Be sure to designate your donation as “sponsoring a pet/long term.”

PACC has a lot of dogs now. These dogs need to go for walks. Volunteers are needed to walk dogs in the a.m. Just show up and you will get some dog walking tips. If you are not physically able to walk dogs, you can throw balls and toys and take dogs out of the kennel and lavish them with attention giving them some human contact. PACC is a very stressful situation for the dogs so any one-to-one interaction they can get, is so well received. Plus it’s good exercise for you too.

Many people are on vacation or off work during the holidays. Conversely, many of the regular dog walkers go away for the holidays. Now would be the time to go walk a dog or dogs.

A big change is happening at pet stores inside many major shopping malls across the valley — and it’s giving thousands of animals in our state — a second chance at life.

One of the biggest shopping mall owners in the country and here in Arizona will no longer be allowing the sale of animals in their malls. When the leases come up for the pet stores, they are replacing them with pet adoption centers.

At first glance, Petopia in Desert Sky Mall looks like any other pet store you’d see in just about every mall in Arizona.

But the cute puppies and curious kittens here are all Humane Society rescues, and they can be yours for an adoption fee.

“Someone can come to the Humane Society stores, and the most they’re going to pay for a puppy is $160 and that includes the spay/neuter surgery, vaccines, a follow up vet exam,” says Bretta Nelson, Arizona Humane Society.

An astounding 24 dogs and 8 cats found their forever homes on Black Friday, November 25th. Yavapai Humane Society offered a Black Friday deal of $20 adoptions and the public came out in droves. Two of the cats adopted were from the YHS cat adoption center in PetSmart.

“It was all hands on deck, all day long. We had volunteers showing dogs and cats to potential adopters and pulled staff from administration to process adoptions,” says Ed Boks, executive director.

32 is the most adoptions YHS has done in one day in recent memory.

Thousands of pets die in shelters nationwide every day because there isn’t enough room to house them. That is why the Humane Society of Yuma wants residents to adopt shelter pets.

“The ugly truth is, there are too many pets out there and not enough loving homes,” said Erin Sitera, HSOY director of development.

“If we continue to buy from pet stores and puppy breeders, we are only contributing to the countless deaths that occur every day. We have to be mindful of the long-term effects our decisions have on our pets.”

Many shelter pets have the advantage of already being trained “and seem to know and appreciate that you saved their life and gave them a second chance,” Sitera said.

Thousands of people came out to Woofstock, the Great Chandler Dog Walk, Saturday at Tumbleweed Park.

The festival is designed to be a fun time for families and their dogs. Those who attended took part in the walks of various distances or the pet parade or watched demonstrations of dog agility events or Flyball, a type of dog relay race. There also were vendors of pet services and products, food for sale and music to complement the good times.

Festival organizers are hoping dog adoption becomes a bigger aspect. Representatives of more than 20 dog-rescue groups were on hand at the park with a variety of pets waiting for adoption.

Pet overpopulation is such an epidemic that some Phoenix area businesses and malls are severing ties with companies connected to breeders.

Those involved in the efforts said business owners have a responsibility to help put a dent in the number of homeless animals in the Valley.

Macerich, the parent company of Westcor, a developer of several malls in the Valley, recently said it will not renew the leases of existing pet stores selling live animals but will open stores allowing customers to adopt rescued pets instead. In the Northeast Valley, Westcor malls include Kierland Commons, Paradise Valley Mall and Scottsdale Fashion Square.

I’m Nick, a stray boy found in Cobblestone Farms. I was almost hit by a car Oct. 9 but those nice people took me in and tried to find my owners. No one has come forward to claim me. I’m approximately 2 years old. I will be vaccinated, microchipped and neutered prior to adoption. I’m a true lap dog and I love to snuggle under covers too. I use a doggy door and also am ok w/ being in a crate. I don’t have any puppy tendencies like chewing or marking. I’m a very good boy.
