A New Castle County officer who was killed in the line of duty last year is receiving a unique tribute.
The News Journal of Wilmington, Del., (http://tinyurl.com/6qyyc2u ) reports that the Faithful Friends Animal Society in Wilmington has named a new cat adoption room after 44-year-old Joseph Szczerba (SUR-buh).
Szczerba had volunteered regularly at the no-kill shelter. His wife Kathy, who still volunteers, said that they became involved after tending to homeless cats in their neighborhood.
She said at a private ceremony at the shelter on Monday that the room is a fitting tribute for her husband because “this is where his heart was.”
Szczerba was fatally stabbed on Sept. 16, 2011, after confronting and chasing a suspect in a vehicle break-in.
